PRIMARY PROJECTS GOES MASSIVE MINIMAL WITH THE COLLAGE SCULPTURE STYLINGS OF ANDREW NIGON
In our fifth exhibition, Primary Projects is honored to present An Official State, the monumental sculptures of Miami based artist Andrew Nigon. As if caught in a moment of euphoric overdose, Nigon’s work explodes with bright colors, throw away luxury, and objects bent on fulfilling a life cycle they will never experience.
The artist explains that his work reflects “the bizarre nature of our existence in which we have an insatiable drive to improve while simultaneously living within bodies that are in constant decay. The result being seductive and tortured characters that currently exist halfway from somewhere to nowhere.”
An Official State is curated by BooksIIII Bischof, Typoe and Chris Oh. Free and open to the public; complimentary beverages are provided by Bacardi Rum and Perrier. The revival of public art over the past 20 years has found an incubator in Miami with Primary Flight, which since 2007 has produced a thoughtful, new brand of outdoor works transcending genres and labels. The concepts and ideology behind public and street art draw similarites to Nigon’s sculptures.
“The aim of my work is to draw attention to the bizarre nature of our existence in which we have an insatiable drive to improve while simultaneously living within bodies that are in constant decay. Using the discarded detritus of society in chorus with brightly colored materials that are typically reserved for happier times, I create heroic yet tragic monuments devoted to a human race that is trapped in an incomplete and fractured world. This latest body of work is meant to serve as “creature comforts” –totems honoring the new possibilities of an uncertain future. The result being seductive and tortured characters that currently exist halfway from somewhere to nowhere.” -A. Nigon.
An opening reception for Andrew Nigon’s An Official State will be held Saturday, June 11th, 2011 from 7 to 11 pm.
